As
well as being an actor Nathan Head has also worked on a
number of radio shows. For just under three years he was a
co-presenter on a weekly entertainment-themed show on
103.6FM Tameside Radio, as well as reading the entertainment
news following the updates from the Sky News Centre on
Sundays for the same station. Nathan Head first appeared on
Tameside Radio in 2009 to talk about an upcoming
film-screening and shortly afterwards joined The Matinée
Show as a regular contributor every Sunday until his
departure in 2011. The show played showtunes, reviewed
musicals
and discussed anything theatrical as well as interviewing
various guests and celebrities such as Sue Devaney, Jeff
Wayne, Nicki French, Sue Jenkins, Scott Bruton, Rowetta Satchell and Margarita
Pracatan. The local Council once ran a Citizen Survey which
showed that Tameside Radio was the third most listened to in
the area, with only Key 103 and BBC Radio 2 having more
listeners at the time. The survey only covered listeners in the
Tameside, Oldham & Glossop region, but the station also had
a good listenership in the Greater Manchester area spreading
as far as Stockport and East Manchester, as well as a
dedicated following of international listeners who tuned in
online. Because of his work on The Matinée Show Nathan Head
was asked to present his own segment called The Showbiz Slot
on an internet radio station which was broadcast weekly on
Online World Radio in 2010 and later re-released as a podcast via
iTunes in 2011, followed by a second series in 2012 and a
one-off special in 2015. |

Brief history of The Matinée Show
|
2006 |
|
Gaydio was originally set up by Ian Wallace
and Toby Whitehouse as an online radio
station in August 2006, Nathan Head was
invited to their prestigious launch night
in Manchester starring three-time Grammy
nominee Bonnie Tyler. One of the stations
new features was an entertainment broadcast
known as The Matinée Show hosted by
presenter James Dean and Manchester drag
performer
Madame Aries. |
|
|
2007 |
|
In
2007 new Fm station Tameside Radio was
launched under programme director Andy Hoyle
and based in a studio located in Cavendish
Mill, in Ashton-under-Lyne. James Dean and
Madame Aries
migrated The Matinée Show from Gaydio to
Tameside Radio, where they continued their
previous format of reviewing local shows and
playing showtunes for two hours every Sunday
afternoon. |
|
|
2008 |
|
The
original Matinée crew at Tameside Radio
consisted of presenters James Dean and drag
performer
Madame Aries, from 2008 Gracie Fields expert Sebastian 'Seb in the corner'
Lassandro gave the latest on the local amateur operatics
scene and Broadway correspondent Suko
Sullivan provided regular updates on the musical theatre circuit
happening across the pond. X-Factor singer Scott Bruton and Eurovision star Nicki
French would also occasionally join the team
for special reports and interviews. |
|
|

Tameside Radio as a special guest on 2nd
August 2009 to talk about his recent horror

|
2009 / 2010 |
|
For almost two years The Matinée Show
team consisted of
actor Nathan Head, drag performer
Madame Aries, presenter James Dean and singer Scott
Bruton. 'Seb in the corner' sadly left the show in
October 2010
but Broadway correspondent Suko Sullivan
continued to provide updates from America via Skype. The
Matinée Show played showtunes, reviewed
musicals and discussed anything theatrical
as well as interviewing various guests and
celebrities such as Sue Devaney, Jeff Wayne,
Nicki French, Sue Jenkins, Rowetta Satchell and Margarita
Pracatan. Also

performed at a live charity event that the
team had organised in aid of a local Hospice. |
|
|
2010 |
|
By the end of 2010
regular listener and local singer John Mercer
had gradually become a regular contributor to
the show and quickly joined the team
alongside presenters
Madame Aries, James
Dean and Nathan Head.
Due to declining health, Madame Aries's
appearances on the show became more
infrequent, meaning that most installments
of The Matinée Show would be hosted by James
Dean, John Mercer and Nathan Head, Nathan also started to read the
entertainment news highlights in 2010, following the
updates from the Sky News Centre on Sundays. |
|
|
2011 |
|
The
Matinée Show team at 103.6FM Tameside Radio
in 2011 consisted of presenter James Dean,
actor Nathan Head and local singer John
Mercer. |
|
Nathan Head left The Matinée Show on 17th
July 2011 and by September the station was
acquired by social landlord New Charter
Housing Trust, merging its team with the
staff at Quest Media Ltd, who also ran the
local newspaper, the Tameside Reporter.
Drivetime presenter Gareth Cottrel took over
as programme controller of the station and
The Matinée Show's format was developed into
a Thursday segment of a daily magazine show
called Tameside Tonight. On 11th December
2011 Nathan Head briefly returned to The
Matinée Show as a special guest to update
the regular listeners on a horror film he
was working on called The Zombie King. |
|
2012 + |
|
With
New Charter Housing Trust now owning
Tameside Radio, Quest Media Ltd. ran the
station, with news and features provided
regularly by the team of journalists from
The Tameside Reporter, a local newspaper
also owned by Quest Media Ltd. James Dean
stayed on as presenter of Tameside Tonight
with
Madame Aries returning on Thursdays to
co-host The Matinée Show with him, John Mercer was
given his own breakfast show and Scott
Bruton returned to the station for his own
weekly music show. Nathan Head was reunited
with The Matinée Show briefly on 14th March
2013 when he returned as a special guest on
Tameside Tonight to talk about his latest
film projects. In 2014 James Dean was
promoted to executive station manager and
The Matinée Show was reinstated on its
original Sunday slot, hosted by John Mercer.
Madame Aries
sadly passed away on 28th February 2018 and
a special tribute show was aired in her
memory on 4th March 2018, which Nathan Head
was asked to return for. Around 2020 The
Matinée Show migrated to My Tameside
community radio in the form of a podcast
with John Mercer continuing to host the
show, and The Matinée was relaunched as a
two-hour show on Sunday 7th February 2021. |
